Alto and its partner Cadence will conduct drone surveys in several communities located between Ottawa and Montréal as part of Alto’s field studies program. These activities will take place over several days between June 9 and the end of 2026, weather permitting.

Depending on the area, residents may observe drones in flight, as well as occasional field crews and the use of movable ground control targets. Operations generally take place during the day, on weekdays. No night flights are planned.

Targeted data collection, limited impacts

The use of drones helps reduce the need for repeated site visits, thereby minimizing disruptions for communities. These activities aim to collect detailed data on the territory, including information on watercourses, natural habitats, and other environmental features. This information is essential for the environmental impact assessment process.

It is important to note that these activities being carried out in these areas do not mean that the project alignment has been determined. Field studies are conducted within the corridor under study to better understand the territory.

Safety and privacy

These operations are carried out safely, in compliance with Transport Canada requirements, and with respect for privacy. Field teams will wear high-visibility safety clothing. Drones typically fly at an altitude of 60 to 120 metres, equivalent to a 20- to 40-storey building. Blurring or pixelation techniques may be applied where required, and the data collected will be stored in a secure environment with strict access restrictions.

Alto also takes a respectful approach and does not operate drones over private properties without prior authorization from the property owner. Where applicable, property owners involved are informed in advance of planned activities.
